Long Street Methodist Church and Sunday School, are a testament to the genius of Edgar Wood (1860-1935) the Middleton artist and architect who rose to international fame around 1900. The beautiful Arts & Crafts Church and School are the highlight of the Middleton Edgar Wood architecture trail and its ‘Golden Cluster’ of outstanding heritage Buildings.
The school and lecture room have recently been restored and refurbished as a community centre as part of the Edgar Wood & Middleton Townscape Heritage Initiative. Conservation work on the church and garden continues with smaller bespoke grants.
Long Street Methodist Church donated the buildings to the Trustees of the Greater Manchester Building Preservation Trust (a wholly owned subsidiary of Heritage Trust for the North West). However, the congregation of Methodists continue to worship in the Church while the school, now called the Edgar Wood Rooms, hosts a variety of social, community and commercial events.
